Joint Family System |
Introduction to Joint Family System and Nuclear Family System
The present generation having lived in a Joint Family
System has taken the initiative to break out and start a Nuclear
Family. This generation very well appreciates the strengths and
weaknesses of both the system. The Joint Family system is still found
to be common in various part of the world like India, China, Africa
etc whereas the Nuclear family is found mostly in western countries
like United States of America etc.
The generation that broke out of the old Joint Family
System did so when individualistic thinking began to gain
predominance in the society. It was exciting to explore, experiment
and establish a living set up one's own. The Nuclear Family
gave immense freedom from the tradition and ways of life that the old
Joint Family System was controlling them with. As it
happens with the most changes in the society, initially the people
from the old Joint Family System did not take this change very
well. They were saddened to see the disintegration of family values and system and emergence of individualistic Nuclear Families.
However, gradually when Nuclear Families became the order of the day,the old generation slowly began to accept the realities and became comfortable with it.
However, gradually when Nuclear Families became the order of the day,the old generation slowly began to accept the realities and became comfortable with it.
Advantages of Nuclear Family System:
The major gain which can be seen from the Nuclear
Family system is the opportunity it provides the individual to
create an identity of his own-something a human being crave for and
are born for. They start to work for there own growth and development
where the young couples gets more freedom to freely do the things
they like. The subsistence of Nuclear Family is dependent upon
either on husband and wife, or both. As there is very few members in
the Nuclear Family the expenses to manage the basic needs of
life tends to be less as compared to the Joint Family system. But
with the advantages, there are many cons to Nuclear Family system.
Disadvantages of Nuclear Family system:
1.Feeling alone in this world, being physically far
removed from the other family members is normally experienced in
Nuclear Family system,
2. In Nuclear Family system all the problems-big
or small one has to deal with of there own as we are unable to afford
the privilege of sharing and downloading the worries on someone
whenever we feel close and connected to facing the big problems of
bringing up children alone, It seen that they start relying on child
care center,
3. The Nuclear Family misses the glory of
celebrations and festivities that binds us to our cultures and gives
us a sense of being at home. This is more relevant to those living
out of the country.
4. For the Nuclear Family System its always heard
in peoples mouth as you have left your parents, your children will
also follow your footsteps, you will be left alone in your old age,
here Karma plays the role !
5. Its very hard in Nuclear Family system to
transfer the passing of the cultural values to our children. Cultural
values are learned and taught by seeing them in action.
What should Nuclear Family System adopt from Joint Family system ?
The advantage and disadvantage of both system are many
but if we are to revive and revamp joint family system model
to create a new one,we need to think how can we learn from the
mistakes that we made in old Joint family system and create a
new system with the insight gained from the experience of Nuclear
family and Joint family system.
1. Family members need to communicate openly and
honestly with one another. The elder in the family must encourage and
create an environment conductive to open communication. In the
absence of such an environment, family members can feel repressed and
suppressed that can lead to discontentment. Non-judgmental listening
and demonstrating mutual trust are necessary to help family members
open up to one another.
2. It is important that members in a joint family
system feel accepted for who they are and as they are. The
crucial part of acceptance of one another is acceptance of our own
weaknesses and limitations and that of others. Realistic expectations
help us to be more tolerant of weaknesses of one another. Having
unrealistic expectation of others is often the root cause of
disappointments and discontentment with others.
3. For a joint family system to be a place where
the members feel valued and nurtured, acknowledgment of the strengths
and different positive aspects that each members brings to the family
and being grateful for the same is useful and even necessary.
4. A joint family system can become a training
ground for the future generation to learn and develop attributes and
skills of living in harmony with fellow citizen in a society. If our
current family model is reflective of a lifestyle that is based on a
selfish existence and intolerance to others views that how can we
expect the society to be any different. A joint family system can
help to build a society that is more tolerant of personal differences
in views and thoughts and where people appreciate and carry forward
the value of mutual respect, love and co-operation.
Advantages of Joint Family system :
1. As per as the advantages concern Joint Family
follows the philosophy of socialism i.e. equal distribution of
wealth among the various members of the family. In joint family
members work or earn according to there capacity and they get
according to there necessity.
2. In Joint family its seen there is economy and
expenditure, whatever has to be spent is spent jointly. Like all the
earning members of the family pay collectively to the expenses of the
materials and resources needed and bought. So, its seen that there is
more economy and expenditure in a Joint Family.
3. There is social security to the members of the
family. Social security means that when there is some kind of
calamity faced by the member of the family like a person meets an
accident and he dies during the accident but after this the wife and
children is looked after by the other members of the joint family.
Its also seen when someone gets disabled or retired from his job than
after retirement in case he doesn't gets pension he gets whatever is
required or whatever is necessary from the Joint Family in
which he is living. So this system provides social security to its
family.
4. Then Joint Family provides much more
entertainment than the nuclear family. In Joint
family where there is so many members in the family so, there is
no chance of people becoming bore in Joint family.
5. In Joint family children get the ideal form of
care. In Joint family as there are ancestor like we can Great Grand
Father or Great Grand Mother or Grand Mother living with the children
and they provide more care in the nurser of the children and they
look after the food and other requirements of the children so
children get ideal care in a joint family and it also means to
development of good quality in the children.
6. Its seen that there is mutual help and cooperation
among the various members of the Joint Family.
Suppose if someone has to get marriage along with father and mother,
the other members also contribute to help them out financially or in
all the ways which helps to manage big things in a Joint Family.
7. In Joint Family there is also seen the
preservation of culture as we can various generation of people
staying together and so the cultural qualities are transmitted from
one generation to another.
8. In Joint family individualism is not seen as
the decision making happens only after the discussion being done
among the members of the Joint family. It stops the
development of self centered people who only think about themselves.
Disadvantages of Joint Family System:
Along with the advantages there are also various
disadvantages Joint Family System -
1. In Joint Family only the leading members of
the family is given the right to take the decision whereby children
and in most cases women s also suffer this issue so they lack the
personality and development is also hindered. They are in most cases
dictated by the decisions of the elders. They do not get the freedom
which is required.
2. In the Joint family the women s are mostly
found in deplorable condition. They are mostly to houses to make
food in the kitchen or take care and nurser the children.
3. Its seen that in Joint Family there is more
procreation in the Joint family because the Grand Father are usually
more orthodox and conservative. They think if there will be more
children it will give strength to the family as there does not arise
any problem to nurser or upbringing of the children.
4. In Joint family there is lack of Privacy some
members of the family might not be comfortable with it as all the
people stay under one roof.
Nuclear Family System |
Comparative difference between Joint Family system and Nuclear Family are :
1. In Joint Family system the members of the
family lack in freedom of exposure to life and in taking decision
whereas, this sort of issue we do not get to see in Nuclear
Family system, they are free from taking any decision that they
find it necessary inspite of waiting for someones interference.
2. The Joint Family System comprises of more
number of members back to 3 to 4 generations whereas the Nuclear
Family has very less members.
3. In the Joint family the responsibility of
handling the family is upon all the earning members of the family
whereas in case of Nuclear family it is upon the husband and wife.
4. In Joint Family only the elder members of the
family can participate in decision making whereas, in the Nuclear
Family every member can contribute there experience and opinions
while making a decision.
5. In Joint family the financial situation is
said to be more strong and financial security is seen to be more of
the members in the family whereas, in Nuclear Family financial
situation depends on the husband and wife.
6. In Joint Family bond and unity is seen to be
more among the members of the family, they share there happiness and
tough situation together where every member helps to recover whereas
comparatively in Nuclear Family it tends to be less.
7. In Joint Family there are many people like
Grand mother who is there to nurser the children which later helps in
better upbringing of children whereas, the Nuclear family
no such sources are available the children's are handed over to the
child care center.
8. In Joint Family there are many people left in
home from whom you can get advice and guidance, if someone does
something wrong they will correct you by showing what is wrong and
what is right whereas, in Nuclear Family there is only mother
and father who most of time is found to be busy, engaged in various
activities so children find it difficulty in sharing there problems.
Conclusion:
Joint Family and
Nuclear Family both
are good in their own places. Both the family system are good based
on the individual thinking and perspective who are living it. Joint
family gives strength whereas Nuclear family gives you freedom. Its
up to us what lesson we should take from them and develop our family
system.
