Introduction to Mahashivratri:
It was the time when Lord Shiva used to stay with Goddess Parvati in
Kailash. One day Goddess Parvati asked Shiva his devotees worship
many rituals to please him but which one pleases him the most. To this
Lord Shiva replied that the 14th night of the new moon in
the month of Phalgun is his favorite day because this day is
celebrated as Shivratri. In this day devotes worship him with strict
spiritual discipline. They do fasting over the night and do all the
rituals over fours successive three hours period of the night. In the
next day morning they feed the Brahmin at first than they break there
fasting. This is also said to be the reason why Mahashivratri came into existence .
How is Mahashivratri Observed ?
Mahashivratri is
observed in almost all parts of India. It is one of the auspicious
day where everyone worships to God of all Goddess Lord Shiva i.e.
Devo K Dev Mahadev . The devotees wake up early in the morning take
bath wears new clothes and offer Shivji Milk,bel leaves and Dhatura etc and chants
mantras.
The devotees observe
fasting on this day for the betterment of their family spiritually
and financially. The prayers are done to get their utmost desires
fulfillment. Its a day when most of the unmarried girls and boys
pray to get good husband and wife . The elder members of the family
pray to the almighty Lord Shiva to keep his blessing on them and
also for their family members. It is day of great enthuse.
How did Mahashivratri came into existence ?
Maha Shivratri which
literally translates to 'Great Night of Shiva' is a Hindu festival
which is largely celebrated mostly in India , Nepal and some other
parts of the world. Out of the 12 Shivratris in the year, the
Maha Shivratri is considered to be the most auspicious one.
There are number of
popular legends relating to the auspicious festival of Mahashivratri
which throws light on the greatness of Lord Shiva and his supremacy
over all other Hindu God and Goddesses. These are some of the
fascinating legends of Lord Shiva which tells us about the origin of
the Mahashivratri-
1. The Legend of Shiva
and Shakti Marriage is said to one of the reason for celebrating this
day by all the Hindu people.
2. Some say its
because of the Samudra Manthan as Lord Shiva saved the world from the
poison that came out during the Samudra Manthan by keeping it in his
throat. Thereafter he got his another name and started to be
worshiped as Neel Kanth (Blue Throat).
3. There is another
legend were it is said when there was a discussion going on between
Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu on who came first in this universe at
that point of time Shiva gave his appearance in the form of Shiva
Linga and tested both of them by being a mediator by questing them to
find the place were from does this Linga starts. In this test Brahma
was found guilty and cursed by him for stating wrong explanation to
the discussion. This is also considered to be a reason where Shiva
gave his appearance as Linga for celebrating this occasion as
Mahashivratri.
4. There is also a
legend when Goddess Ganga was helped by Lord Shiva to come to Earth
from Brahma Lok. Lord Shiva helped to establish Ganga on Earth . This
is also said to be the reason of Celebration of Mahashivratri.
In India Monday, 4th of March 2019 is the day when Shivratri will be observed and celebrated this year.
